An overnight fire has caused substantial damage to a mushroom factory in Co Westmeath.

Units of Athlone and Ballymahon Fire Service were called to Gortmore Mushrooms in Drumraney at around 2am.

It is understood that substantial damage has been caused to the facility.

The factory is considered to be a significant employer in Drumraney, with 22 members of staff. It has been in operation for over three decades.

The scene of the fire has been preserved for a technical examination, and the results will determine the course of the investigation.
