An investigation is under way into an alleged assault and public order incident in Co Longford overnight.
It is understood a number of people were involved in a confrontation on Ballymahon's main street in the early hours of this morning.
It is believed that the confrontation was between members of two related families, who had travelled from the UK to Ireland for a memorial event in Longford town.
A man in his 40s was taken to Mildand Regional Hospital, Mullingar with what is believed to be stab wounds.
He has been transferred to St James' Hospital in Dublin where he is said to be in a serious condition.
It is understood that gardaí are searching for a number of men who fled the scene after a car was rammed and the man was stabbed.
The PSNI has also been contacted by gardaí in relation to the search.
In what is believed to be a related incident, gardaí were called to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar this morning.
The scene in Ballymahon was cordoned off for a forensic examination.
Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact Longford Garda Station on 043 - 3350570.
Meanwhile, a garda operation at Ballymacormack cemetery outside Longford has been stood down.
It followed concerns that the public order incident in Ballymahon may have led to further incidents at the cemetery during the unveiling at a memorial.
Gardaí say the event passed off peacefully.
