Water supplies have been restored fully to homes and businesses in the Navan area of Co Meath.

Irish Water confirmed that the trunk main that feeds water into Navan town has been successfully repaired after it burst earlier.

They said between 5,000 to 10,000 customers may have experienced some outages and or low pressure while the repair was taking place.

Tankers were on standby to replenish water storage tanks in Our Lady's Hospital in Navan in case its water storage ran out during the incident.

The R162 Navan/Kingscourt Road at the bottom of Proudstown Hill was closed while crews work on the pipe, but Irish Water have said a temporary reinstatement of the road is now taking place.

Irish Water apologised for the inconvenience caused by the incident.

It is the second time in a week that water supplies in the northeast were affected by a burst pipe after a similar incident in Drogheda affected homes and business for almost a week.

A family in Proudstown outside Navan said they are devastated by the damage caused during last night's water mains burst.

Jimmy Murtagh, 81, and his wife Joan contacted the local fire service this morning when they noticed water on the bathroom floor.

The couple live in a bungalow close to where the burst occurred. A similar burst happened at the same location in December 2015.

Sarah Murtagh, a daughter of the couple who also lives at the house, said Meath County Council were able to shut down the water supply within 20 minutes.

She said while the damage this time is not as bad as 2015, the emotional distress is taking its toll on her parents.
