Workers at a Bord na Móna-owned power station in the midlands are on strike this morning in a dispute over pay and bargaining powers.

Thirty-six members of SIPTU at Edenderry Power Plant in Co Offaly are involved in a 24-hour disruption.

The plant will not be providing energy to the national electricity grid for the duration of the industrial action.

They say they have not received a pay increase since 2007 and their annual salary is €15,000 less than others doing similar work at other power stations around the country.

SIPTU says the dispute is in relation to the Bord na Móna subsidiary refusing to accept that a collective bargaining agreement signed in November 2013 covers members' right to have their basic pay increases negotiated by SIPTU representatives.

In a statement, Bord na Móna say there are "are available for meaningful discussions" with the union " that would progress a resolution of the dispute subject to industrial action being withdrawn."
