Driver travelling at 174km/h in 100km/h zone one of 4,650 caught speeding

A motorist travelling at 174km/h in a 100km/h zone was among the almost 4,650 people caught speeding over the bank holiday weekend, with 209 drivers arrested for driving under the influence.

A roads policing operation was in place from 28 May to yesterday, 2 June.

Gardaí said that almost 4,650 drivers were found to be speeding during the operation including one motorist clocked at 174km/h in a 100km/h zone on N83, Baile Chláir, Co Galway, yesterday.

Another driver was detected travelling at 129km/h in a 80km/h zone on the R248 at Stradbally, Co Laois, while a motorist was clocked at 96km/h in a 60km/h zone on the N4 at Drishoge, Co Roscommon yesterday.

A driver was found to be driving at 84km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Drummartin Link Road in Dublin 14.

Since Thursday, 510 people were detected holding a mobile phone while driving or not wearing a seatbelt.

Gardaí reported that there were four fatalities and 12 collisions that resulted in serious injury during the operation period.

All road users are encouraged to exercise caution on the roads, as the number of people killed on Irish roads so far this year stands at 73.
