Driver travelling at 149km/h in 100km/h zone one of 3,140 caught speeding

A motorist travelling at 149km/h in a 100km/h zone was among more than 3,000 people caught speeding over the bank holiday weekend, with 140 drivers arrested for driving under the influence.

A roads policing operation has been in operation since Thursday.

Gardaí said that more than 3,140 motorists were detected speeding since then, including one motorist clocked at 149km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N7 at Brownsbarn in Dublin yesterday.

Another driver was detected travelling at 102km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R138 at Dernaglug, Doohamlet in Co Monaghan, while a motorist was clocked at 120km/h in a 80km/h zone on the R458 at Caherpeak East in Kilcolgan in Co Galway.

More than 140 people were detected driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs

Since Thursday, more than 340 people were detected holding a mobile phone while driving or not wearing a seatbelt.

Three people were killed in separate road crashes over the weekend, bringing to 72 the total number people killed in Irish roads so far this year.
