A motorist travelling at 138 km/h in a 50km/h zone was among the more than 3,000 drivers detected speeding during the first four days of a garda Easter road traffic operation.
The operation began on 2 April at 7am and will run until 7am tomorrow, with gardaí conducting both statutory mandatory intoxicant testing and high-visibility checkpoints.
Gardaí said that as of 7am this morning, 138 people have been arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant such as alcohol and drugs.
Over 310 people were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt during the same period.
The highest speed reported by gardai was a motorist travelling at 138 km/h in a 50km/hr zone in Cahir, Co Tipperary.
Gardaí also detected a motorist travelling at 117 km/h in an 80km/hr zone on the N4 in Lucan, Dublin.
They said one person died in a road traffic incident over over the holiday weekend.
A woman, who was in her 40s, died yesterday after she was struck by a lorry in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, on 3 April.
Her death brings to 43 the number of people who have died on Irish roads so far this year.
