Over 2,100 drivers found speeding in first 72 hours of Easter weekend

Gardaí detected over 2,100 drivers speeding in the first 72 hours of the Easter bank holiday weekend.

A garda road safety operation has been in operation since 7am on Thursday 2 April.

Gardaí are carrying out mandatory intoxicant testing and high-visibility policing checkpoints, and have urged all road users to support their efforts to keep people safe across the Easter weekend.

So far, a total of 98 people have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Over 250 people were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt in the same timeframe.

One motorist was detected driving at 102 km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Stillorgan Road in Co Dublin yesterday.

Another motorist was detected driving at 78 km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Navan Road in Kells, Co Meath.

The road safety operation will run until 7am on Tuesday.
