A spell of unsettled and possibly stormy weather is set to hit the country over the Easter weekend, with Met Éireann warning of potentially damaging gales and coastal flooding.

In an advisory issued this afternoon, the forecaster said a "mobile Atlantic flow" will affect Ireland, bringing stormy weather to some areas on Saturday, with the potential for some severe or damaging west to southwest gusts.

It said that strong onshore winds, combined with high waves, may lead to wave overtopping and flooding in low-lying and exposed coastal areas.

Areas along the west and north coasts may be particularly vulnerable.

High astronomical tides (Spring Tides) coinciding with storm surge and persistent onshore winds will further increase the risk of coastal flooding, Met Éireann said.

Meanwhile, temperatures are set to drop tonight to around -1 Celsius with some frost and ice likely.

Tomorrow will see outbreaks of rain and drizzle moving into west and southwest counties, before later pushing into rest of the country, accompanied by freshening southwest winds.

The rain will be heaviest across west Connacht with spot flooding likely.
