Martina and Ammi Burke have been arrested on foot of a court order in Co Roscommon.

The High Court had ordered the immediate arrest and committal to prison of teacher Enoch Burke's mother, Martina, and sister, Ammi, for contempt of court.

They were arrested at Castlerea Prison this afternoon.

It is understood they arrived to visit their son and brother Enoch Burke, who is in custody in the Co Roscommon prison.

Martina and Ammi were accompanied by Enoch's father, Sean, and all three visited him in prison.

However, prison authorities contacted gardaí who were waiting when the family emerged from the prison.

The court order was executed, Martina and Ammi were arrested, and it is understood that gardaí are escorting them to Dublin.

They are due to be incarcerated in the Dóchas Centre, the female prison at the Mountjoy Prison complex.

On 4 March, Mr Justice Brian Cregan ordered that the two women should be jailed for two weeks each because of their behaviour at a hearing last month.

He said they had repeatedly interrupted proceedings by shouting and roaring, and had to be removed from the court by gardaí.

The judge said it was "long past time for the court to call a halt to this family circus".

He said it had become clear to him that members of the Burke family were impervious to reason and were motivated by a faith-driven ideology, refusing to accept the rule of law.

But he said the rule of law applied to them and to every other citizen, whether they accepted it or not.
