A man has been brought before the Special Criminal Court charged with the murder of Denis Donaldson in Co Donegal 20 years ago.
Mr Donaldson, a former key figure in Sinn Féin in Stormont, was shot dead in a remote cottage in Donegal in April 2006, after he admitted he had been an informer for the police and MI5 over two decades.
49-year-old Antoin Duffy, with an address at an Bhráid, Cionn Caslach in Co Donegal was extradited from Scotland and brought before the Special Criminal Court this afternoon.
He was charged with the murder of Mr Donaldson between 3 and 4 April 2006 at An Dúchoraidh in Donegal.
He is also charged with possession of a shotgun and ammunition at the same location with intent to endanger life.
Mr Duffy also faces a charge of attempted murder of a then 28-year-old man, Liam Copeland McGinley, at Meenaboll in Churchill near Glenveagh National Park on 19 November 2007.
He is further charged with possession of a shotgun and ammunition with intent to endanger life at the same location on the same date.
Detective Garda Adrian Ahern told the court he met the accused man at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel at 1.22pm and explained to him that he was arresting him and conveying him to the Special Criminal Court on foot of a warrant issued in 2019.
The court was told that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed that he be brought before the Special Criminal Court in respect of the six charges.
Mr Duffy spoke only to confirm his identity.
Judge Patrick McGrath remanded Mr Duffy in custody until 13 April when his case will be mentioned again before the court.
