A ballot of members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) in RTÉ has been suspended due to a "technical issue" with the administration of the online vote.

NUJ members were being asked whether they had confidence in RTÉ's New Direction Strategy.

The ballot opened last Monday and was due to close this week.

In an update to members, the NUJ said that a technical issue had arisen with the administration of the current ballot of no confidence.

"In consultation with the branch committee and the Irish Secretary a decision has been made to suspend voting until further notice," the update stated.

"We hope to be back to you by the end of the week with the issue resolved," it added.

The NUJ opened the ballot over what it described as "grave concerns" about the outsourcing of the production of programmes as part of RTÉ's future strategy.

"We have no confidence in and do not support the strategy currently being pursued by RTÉ and call on management and Government to cease its implementation," the NUJ motion stated.

Last month, SIPTU members in RTÉ voted no confidence in the management plan which the union said would result in the endless outsourcing of jobs and deal a fatal blow to public service broadcasting.

RTÉ has previously said it believes that the five-year strategy, now in its second year of implementation, offers the best way forward to secure the future of Ireland's national public service media and give more to Irish audiences in a much changed media landscape and with rapidly evolving audience habits.

"This strategy was published following extensive consultation with the public, RTÉ staff and a wider group of stakeholders. The vast majority of staff supported the need for RTÉ to evolve as outlined in the strategy during this consultation process," RTÉ has said.
