The warning came into effect at 6pm

A Status Yellow wind warning is in place for Donegal, Galway and Mayo.

The warning came into effect at 6pm this evening and will last until 5am tomorrow.

Strong and gusty southwesterly winds are forecast, especially in coastal areas.

Met Éireann has warned of difficult travelling conditions as a possible impact of the weather conditions.

It has also warned of the risk of debris, loose objects being displaced and fallen branches and trees resulting from the strong winds.

Speaking on Drivetime, Mark Bowe from Met Éireann said there is a front moving in this evening and it is starting to get cloudier with rain pushing in.

"Behind that front is where the winds are getting quite strong, especially across the west and northwest. That's Connacht and parts of Ulster as well," he said.

"Those winds will be very strong and blustery, especially around the coast in areas like Galway, Mayo and Donegal.

"We're going to see some very strong winds later on this evening. That will go all the way through until about tomorrow morning.

"So we may see some falling trees. Any loose debris will get blown around."

He said that there will be some difficult travel conditions especially near coastal areas.

Possible snowfall later in the week - Met Éireann

Met Éireann said outbreaks of rain will clear eastwards this evening and early tonight and will be followed by clear spells and scattered showers extending from the west.

It added that tomorrow will be dry and bright for most, with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers.

However, Met Éireann is forecasting that Thursday will be wet and windy with outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, along with fresh to strong and gusty southwest wind.

It also said some lying snow is possible across some west and northwest areas on Thursday night and showers will fall as sleet and possibly snow early on Friday.

Mr Bowe said that due to a "buckling of the jet stream" much colder air will cover Ireland at the weekend leading to much colder temperatures.
