Met Éireann has said that last month was the 19th wettest February on record with 19% more rainfall than normal for Ireland.

Rainfall, however, was highest in the east and the south of the country.

Dublin Airport experienced 255% of its normal February rainfall, making it the wettest February on record at the airport.

It was a similar experience at Dublin's Phoenix Park which had its second wettest February on record with two-and-a-half times its normal rainfall for the month.

Dunsany in Co Meath also recorded its second wettest February on record.

In addition to heavy rainfall, the east of the country experienced particularly low sunshine amounts.

Casement Aerodrome in Co Dublin experienced just under half its usual February sunshine at just 36.7 hours for the entire month.

This was the lowest February sunshine at Casement Aerodrome in records stretching back for 62 years.

Much lower-than-average sunshine amounts were also recorded at Dublin Airport which experienced its dullest February since 1947 with 36.6 hours of sunshine recorded there.

It was dull everywhere, however.

Proportionately, Shannon Airport experienced the most sunshine but still only managed to get 79% of its typical February sunshine hours at 55 hours for the month.

The highest number of daily sunshine hours was 8.3 hours at Cork Airport on 1 February.

The heaviest rainfall occurred on 5 and 6 February and again between 11 and 13 February.

Monthly rainfall totals ranged from 65.6mm at Oak Park, Co Carlow to 149.2mm at Dunsany, Co Meath.

The highest daily rainfall total was 35.3mm at Claremorris, Co Mayo on 12 February.

This was the highest February daily rain fall recorded in Claremorris in 25 years of records.

The data is contained in Met Éireann's Monthly Climate Statement for February published today.

The forecaster has said that the average temperature in Ireland during the month was 7.21C.

This was 1.21C above the long-term February average temperature recorded during the 30 years between 1991 and 2020.

It was 2.08C higher than the average for the previous 30 years from 1961 to 1990.

All of Met Éireann's synoptic weather stations across the country recorded mean air temperatures above their long-term averages for the month.

Deviations from mean air temperature ranged from 0.5C at Malin Head, Co Donegal and Belmullet, Co Mayo to 2.0C in Moore Park, Co Cork.

Mean temperatures for the month ranged from 5.7C at Knock Airport, Co Mayo to 9.1C at Valentia Observatory, Co Kerry.

The month's highest temperature was 14.8C, recorded at Moore Park in Co Cork on 23 and 25 February.
