On a summer's day in 1998, 18-year-old Deirdre Jacob vanished outside her home in Newbridge, Co Kildare.

She had spent the previous year at university in England while studying to become a teacher, but was spending the summer back at her family home.

That afternoon, she made the 20-minute walk to Newbridge Town Centre to visit the local AIB bank and the Post Office.

When last seen, Ms Jacob was wearing a dark coloured t-shirt and white shoes. She had shoulder length black hair, and CCTV cameras captured her carrying a distinctive 'CAT' branded black satchel bag.

Several witnesses reported seeing her close to her family home, but she never made it back inside.

Despite a long-running garda investigation, no trace of Deirdre Jacob has ever been found in the 27 years since her disappearance.

'We don't know what happened to her'

Deirdre's parents, Michael and Bernadette Jacob, have spent years searching for answers.

Speaking to Crimecall last October, Bernadette Jacob said their children are the "centre of our lives".

"And now we don't know where one of them is, we don't know what happened to her," she said.

"It would mean so much for us to know where she is and what happened to her. We hope and we pray for that."

Mrs Jacob recalled her daughter's love of clothes, fashion, and spending time with friends. She vividly remembers the last day she saw Deirdre.

"When I reached our front door, straight away I wondered; 'Where is Deirdre?' Because she was to be there," she said.

"So straight away, alarm bells were ringing."

Her husband Michael said the weeks that followed were like being in "free fall".

"Hours go into days, days go into weeks. That's how it was," he said.

"Twenty-seven years have passed. And there are so many times over those years that you're drawn to the fact that there is a gap in the family group. Photographs being taken and Deirdre should be in them."

Bernadette and Michael Jacob have always continued their public appeal

On the 20th anniversary of Deirdre's disappearance in 2018, a cold case review led to the case being changed from a missing person case to a murder investigation.

This brought increased resources to the case and renewed garda appeals for information in recent years.

The Jacob family always continued their public appeal in the hope that new evidence or information will emerge.

Gardaí today appealed to anyone with any information, "no matter how small or insignificant you might believe it to be" to contact any garda station.

Anyone who wishes to provide information confidentially can contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
