Driver travelling at 190km/h among 3,500 found speeding over bank holiday

A motorist travelling at 190km/h in a 100km/h zone was among nearly 3,500 people detected speeding across the bank holiday weekend.

Over 800 people were detected speeding on bank holiday Monday alone.

Two people were killed in separate road incidents over weekend, while 15 people sustained serious injuries in 14 other crashes.

A man in his 50s died after he was struck by a car in Co Kildare on Saturday, and a man in his 40s was killed in a collision between a car and a lorry in Co Cavan on Monday.

So far this year, 13 people have died on Irish roads.

A total of 188 people were killed in road collisions last year, an increase of 14 from the previous year and the highest number since 2014.

Gardaí carried out an enhanced Road Safety and Traffic Enforcement campaign over the St Brigid's bank holiday weekend from Thursday morning until Tuesday morning.

During this time, 193 drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant while nearly 400 drivers were detected for driving while using a mobile phone.

Over 660 vehicles were detained by gardaí, 50% of which were seized for having no insurance.

The highest speed reported by gardaí was of a motorist travelling at 190km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N4 in Aughamore, Co Leitrim.

Gardaí also detected a motorist travelling at 134km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Katharine Tynan Road in Dublin 24.

Other notable top speeds detected by gardaí included:

  • 123km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R154 in Trim, Co Meath
  • 154km/h in in an 80km/h zone on the N16 in Glencar, Co Sligo
  • 173km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N18 in Ballinacurra (Weston), Co Limerick
  • 95km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Malahide Road, Dublin 3
  • 130km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R239 in Fahan, Co Donegal
