Residents of an area of south Dublin that was badly flooded during Storm Chandra say they are angry and frustrated that a nearby flood relief scheme is taking so long to complete.
A major cleanup operation was under way on Grange Park Road in Rathfarnham where dozens of homes, gardens and cars were damaged by floodwater.
Among the houses flooded was a home the owners had just returned to during Christmas week, after fully renovating the house after six years of saving.
Many of those impacted were too upset to speak to RTÉ News but resident Kevin Giblin said several people had to be rescued when the flooding struck early yesterday morning.
He said many people's homes had been left devastated by the impact.
"One of our cars is gone, the garage is flooded out and our back garden.
"We now have water under the floors so the house stinks and it's probably going to take us a couple of weeks or months to get that dried out.
"We're sort of disgusted because this road has flooded in the past but this was two feet higher than anything previously."
Adding to local frustrations is the fact that there are flood relief works taking place just a few metres away that have been been going on for some time and it is not clear when they will be completed.
Senior Engineer with South Dublin County Council Gary Walsh said they did not realise the extent of the rain that would fall yesterday.
"The heavy rains that were up the mountains were the problem and they came down into the urban areas in big surges that were very hard to control and very hard to predict aswell.
"So since then it's kind of been firefighting a little."
Mr Walsh added: "The Whitechurch River Flood alleviation scheme is under construction just up the road.
"It has been in the pipeline for a number of years but unfortunately it went through a judicial review a number of years ago which really delayed the delivery of the scheme by about three years.
"The scheme is due to be completed in the next 12 months I believe and that's when we hope we'll never see this like happen down here in Grange Park again but it's just a shame we didn't get it delivered in the timeline that we would have like to see it delivered."
