A cow on a farm in Co Tyrone has equalled a world record after giving birth to five calves.

The farmer, Noel Moore, whose farm is near the village of Killen, said he had never seen anything like it in over 50 years of farming.

He spoke on RTÉ's Today with David McCullagh about his surprise when the five calves were born.

"I went out to milk on Saturday, 3 January. I checked the cow when I went out to see and I knew by her that she was sick of calving," he said.

"I went on to milk then, came back and checked her again and she still had done nothing. So I phoned the vet to come out to see if there was anything wrong.

"The vet came out and stuck her hand in the cow and said that one of the calves was across the back calving passage.

"She took the calf out, and then she put her hand in again and said, 'there's another calf here'. She went on and she had four calves out.

"After that, she said, 'I’ll just check this cow again to make sure there's no more calves in her’.

"I said, ‘I don't think there'd be any more in her after four!’

"But she put in her hand and said, ‘there's another calf!’.

"I just found it with the point of my fingers.

"There were five calves then."

"The calves are doing powerful well."

Mr Moore said that while he had never seen anything like a cow giving birth to quintuplets, another cow of his gave birth to twins earlier this week.

He said that the five calves were doing well.

"The calves are doing powerful well. They're almost a fortnight old now," he said.

"They're big calves. They're all around the one size too."

Sadly, the mother did not survive after giving birth.

"The cow didn't survive. The calves survived, but we couldn’t get her to eat again, so she passed away," said Mr Moore.

Mr Moore said that the quintuplets had become something of a tourist attraction, and that people had been coming to the farm to see them.

His sister, Lynette Young, said that her children were very excited about the arrival of the five calves.

"They're wild about them, they love them," she said, speaking on the same programme.

"They were actually looking to go and see them on Wednesday, but it was such a wet day, they couldn't go.

"But they love to see the wee calves," she added.
