A woman remains in a serious condition in hospital after being attacked by a dog at her home in Carlow.

The incident occurred at a house in the Ashfield Estate, just outside Carlow town, shortly after 2pm yesterday.

The woman, who is in her late 50s, was airlifted to the Mater Hospital in Dublin.

The dog, which is understood to be an XL Bully type, was euthanised by a vet at the scene.

It is understood that the dog was a family pet and from the household where the incident occurred.

Restricted breeds of dogs are subject to strict legal controls. The owners of such dogs are required to follow additional rules in the interests of public safety, such as keeping their dogs muzzled when in a public place.

Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council Ken Murnane said his thoughts and the thoughts of everyone in Carlow are with the woman and her family.

He said that the tragic nature of the incident has shocked not just the local community but the entire country.
