Pedestrian dies after being hit by lorry in Co Monaghan

A man in his 60s has died following a collision involving a lorry and a pedestrian in Monaghan.

Gardai attended the scene at Old Cross Square in Monaghan Town shortly after 10.15am.

The male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

Forensic Collision Investigators examined the scene and the road has since reopened.

Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to contact them at Monaghan Garda station.

It comes as three people died in separate road crashes over 24 hours between Thursday morning and yesterday morning, with one woman also in a critical condition following a fourth crash.

The death of the pedestrian in Monaghan brings to 172 the number of people who have died on Irish roads this year.
