The Government has allocated between €200m and €500m to a major upgrade of the GPO in Dublin's O’Connell Street.

The funding, which has been allocated under the National Development Plan, will be used for a museum as well as cultural, office, civic and retail use.

A Sectoral Investment Plan published as part of the NDP today said the construction timeline will be from 2029 to 2032.

The project will be overseen by the Office of Public Works.

Fine Gael’s Dublin spokesperson James Geoghegan said the GPO’s heritage as the birthplace of the Republic in 1916 must be central to the project.
