Watch: Russia's goal is for US to withdraw interest - Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Russian President Vladimir Putin does not want to finish the war because he did not get all of the goals he wanted.

Mr Zelensky made the comments during an interview at Iveagh House in Dublin when he was asked about Vladimir Putin's comments today that Russia was "ready" for war if Europe seeks one.

"It’s very difficult to comment [on] the words of the leader of Russia because he really doesn’t want [to] finish this war because he didn’t get all the goals - what he wanted at the very beginning of this aggression. He wanted to destroy us totally, our freedom, our people," said Mr Zelensky.

"But he’s really been very surprised ... that he didn’t get any real goal what he wanted - to destroy and break Ukraine and Europe … and that’s why Putin is [trying] to find new reasons not to finish this war."

Mr Zelensky said: "We don't trust the words, it doesn’t matter [that] they are good words or bad words, if you don’t trust [them], it doesn’t matter for me.

"But [if] we’re afraid if America will be tired? Of course. It’s not good for us. It is a goal of Russians - to withdraw interest of America from this situation and this is their [Russia’s] goal."
