Ballet Ireland is on the road bringing a new production of Cinderella to theatres and venues across the island of Ireland.

In an Irish twist on the classic fairytale, the version, choreographed by Loughlan Prior, tells the story of a young Irish woman called Ella who emigrates to New York in the 1950s.

This cross island tour began in Dublin, and during November and December, it will follow an ambitious touring schedule with Artistic Director of Ballet Ireland Anne Maher explaining that it "means so much to Ballet Ireland to tour nationally, everywhere from Donegal to Kerry and from East to West and everywhere in between. It's a massive part of our remit".

Bringing Cinderella off the beaten tracks means a lot to one of the stars of the show, acclaimed dancer Ruaidhri Maguire.

He dances two roles in the show, with Mr Maguire explaining that he dances the roles of "the evil Mr Whitmore" and the version of the Prince in the show with another dance.

"In our version the prince has been transformed into the wealthy and all around 'good guy' with a big New York name - Alexander Vanderbilt," he said.

The lead dancer explained that for him, being on the tour, is "very special because I myself found ballet through seeing a Ballet Ireland tour when it came close to my home ... when I was quite young".

Mr Maguire added that being "able to come and dance for my home company and be able to give something back that was given to me, is very special to me".

The tour has so far visited The Market Place theatre in Armagh, an Gríanán Theatre in Letterkenny, the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin and a theatre Sligo.

For Kieran Griffiths, Director of Hawk's Well Theatre, "to have a company like Ballet Ireland come here to Sligo, to bring Cinderella here - something that sold out quite a while ago is wonderful".

He explained that on the night, seeing the audience outside waiting in the lobby before the curtain went up was "great as the anticipation and expectation of what is going to be a fabulous production was so heartening for us here".

In this version of the show, Ella first bumps in to her prince, millionaire heir Alexander Vanderbilt, on the street, but there are many twists and turns before they meet again.

Ella becomes a maid at the glitzy Plaza Hotel, working hard with her fellow staff members.

Two notorious hotel guests, sisters Gertrude and Winifred who are based on the evil stepsisters from the classic tale, give Ella a particularly difficult time with her work.

But then a fairy godmother comes to call, and the famous ballet slipper saves the day.

Audiences in Sligo said they really enjoyed the show, saying it was "absolutely beautiful, you feel you are in another world".

One audience member said that she found the link with the emigration theme moving, and said that she thought the show handled the idea really well, and said that it was a "lovely tribute for all the generations who emigrated".
