Met Éireann has warned that temperatures could drop as low as -3C tomorrow night as Status Yellow snow and ice warnings are in effect for 11 counties.

"Last night we got down to -1, I think tonight we're going to get down to -2 and tomorrow night down to -3," meteorologist Siobhán Ryan said.

"So cold, but not a severe cold."

Sligo, Leitrim, and all of Ulster are under the snow and ice warnings until midday tomorrow.

Ms Ryan told RTÉ's Drivetime that wintry showers may be scattered across the country during this cold spell.

She said there will be "lots of sunshine across the country, a cold northerly Arctic airflow, and that's going to allow a few showers to filter down in the flow, much like last night and this morning".

"The focus of the wintry showers will be generally in over Ulster and counties of the northwest, and perhaps one or two flurries feeding down further south, so you couldn't risk or rule out the odd shower for the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains and maybe in across parts of Kerry too.

"Really the focus of any wintry precipitation will be generally in over Ulster, you might see temporary snow on lower levels here as well."

Ms Ryan warned that a wind chill may make it seem colder than it actually is, and encouraged people to consider whether they need to be outdoors in these conditions.

"Last night was bitterly cold ... Even though the temperatures got down to -1, if you were out, it actually felt colder than tonight and tomorrow.

"It's all about whether you need to be out, if you've got animals outdoors, but either way it's cold for the next number of nights.

"Over the weekend, temperatures are going to rise, but I'd say people will still say it feels cold," Ms Ryan said.

Met Éireann warned motorists to expect hazardous travelling conditions and icy stretches.
