Irish fans arriving into Dublin Airport this morning described the incredible scenes of victory in Hungary yesterday and the "many adults crying tears of joy".
"I was bawling," one man said as he outlined how Irish fans could not believe their eyes at the 96th minute goal.
The supporters included 10-year-old Ollie, who was at the match with his father to see his hero Troy Parrott score a hat-trick.
He said he was extremely excited to go into school this morning to tell his classmates about seeing up close the success of the national football team.
Others returning from Budapest said the connection between the fans who travel for away matches like this is "special" and that they are all now pinning their hopes on continued success at the play offs.
All the fans said while Troy Parrott is a legend for all the goals he scored, they are proud of the entire team after this "extraordinary" victory.
Meanwhile, in Dublin's north inner city, spirits were high around where Mr Parrott grew up.
"Troy is from here and so is Kellie Harrington so there's a lot of talent in the area," one woman said.
Another added that the win is "on everybody's lips" and that they already feels as though the Ireland team is through to the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Dublin Zoo has decided to name one of its parrots Troy in honour of Ireland's hat-trick hero in Budapest's Puskás Aréna.
The male citron-crested cockatoo, a critically endangered parrot species, did not have a name but was today officially christened Troy by Dublin Zoo.
Diana Farrell, Zookeeper at Dublin Zoo said: "There are very few moments that leave the people of a nation speechless but that’s exactly what Troy Parrott’s third goal did yesterday.
"It was a beautiful, joyous moment and while some might say we’re Hungary for attention, we just want to honour Ireland’s hat-trick hero - a Dublin native born and bred - in a way that only Dublin Zoo can.
"It’s not quite the statue many fans were calling for at full-time yesterday, but we hope the original Troy sees it as another feather in his cap to go with the match ball he took home."
Dublin Zoo have also issued an invite to Troy Parrott to meet his namesake who they have said "is more of a winger".
