Taoiseach Micheál Martin has insisted that a review of Fianna Fáil's presidential campaign is "not delayed".

The Taoiseach's comments come after a meeting of TDs and senators heard earlier this week that the review of Fianna Fáil's Presidential Election campaign may not be completed until December.

The update was provided by one of the members of the review team, Deputy Tom Brabazon.

Speaking at the Garda College in Templemore today, Mr Martin said "the review has been undertaken in a very comprehensive way", adding that there "is no issue with it".

The Fianna Fáil leader said he was "bemused" by the commentary around the review. "It should be allowed get on with its work," he said, adding that "there are no issues".

"They have been interviewing people, they have been engaging," he added.

Mr Martin said he did not accept the "concept of a delay".

"They are getting on with their work. They are doing it. It will be comprehensive. It will be complete."

He said it was important the review was "done" but said he was not as "exercised about it" as others are.

When asked if he sees the man standing beside him, Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan, as his successor, Mr Martin says he sees him as a "very effective Minister for Justice".

Mr O'Callaghan joked that it was unfair to suggest the "Taoiseach's job was being sought by Deputy Ryan O'Meara", also standing alongside them.

He said Mr Martin "deserves a lot of the credit" for the General Election last year.

"We need to have a broader perspective on issues," said Mr O'Callaghan.

Mr Martin said his party are "focused on the issues facing the Irish people", adding that the Presidential Election was a "deeply disappointing experience".

When asked if a critical review of him as Taoiseach could encourage rebels to support Minister O'Callaghan, Mr Martin said he was not going to pre-empt the work of the review.

"The most important thing is to let the review get on with its work," he said.
