The mother of missing schoolboy Philip Cairns has died.

Philip was 13 when he went missing on 23 October 1986 while making his way back to Coláiste Éanna in Rathfarnham in Dublin, where he was a first year student.

His mother, Alice Cairns, died on Tuesday.

The mother of six was predeceased by her husband Philip in 2014.

Six days after he disappeared, Philip's schoolbag was found dumped in a laneway metres from his home on the Ballyroan Road in Rathfarnham.

Some of his books were missing from his bag.

In 2016, Ms Cairns spoke to RTÉ's Today with Sean O'Rourke, where she said she felt "robbed of her son" and that he was robbed of a future.

She said she has to have her own peace and for that "you have to forgive".

On the 20th anniversary of his disappearance, his brother Eoin described the impact of what had happened on his parents and sisters.

"Philip is always there in the sense that he is not there. At Christmas, birthdays, weddings and other family occasions we think of how Philip should be with us."

Gardaí in Rathfarnham have issued a number of appeals in the years since Philip’s disappearance.

Anyone with any information in relation to the investigation is asked to contact Rathfarnham Garda Station on 01-6666500, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
