Catherine Connolly did not directly speak about the themes that will define her presidency in an inauguration speech that fused political edge with a commitment to diplomacy.

But her priorities are crystal clear and she has vowed to be courageous in championing them.

She wants to be someone who is a unifying force in the non-political third house of the Oireachtas, while at the same time acting as a catalyst for change.

This will be done through words delivered in both Irish and English.

All this Catherine Connolly hopes to achieve while being a steady hand in Áras an Uachtaráin.

It is therefore something of an intricate balancing act, but it is one that the calm yet steadfastly determined President looks capable of carrying off.

Watch: President Catherine Connolly's inauguration speech

The President is keenly aware of the prevailing domestic and global circumstances that are at play as she takes office.

Indeed, in a nod to the biggest social crisis facing the country, Catherine Connolly's speech spoke about a home being a fundamental human right.

There were references to the threat of wars and how opinions which suggest that this is inevitable will never been acceptable to Irish people.

In this context, she also cited the country’s long tradition of neutrality which she believes gives it the standing and credibility to promote alternative diplomatic solutions.

It all suggests that Catherine Connolly will remain a passionate advocate for neutrality, notwithstanding an increased emphasis by Government around the need to amend at least parts of the country’s defence policies.

The need to show leadership on climate change and the importance of working together to ensure a "sustainable existence" on the planet are key priorities for the new President too.

There was also a promise of open and inclusive dialogue across the Island of Ireland, one that will be guided by the spirit of the Good Friday Agreement.

It would be a dialogue that acknowledged the constitutional desire for a united Ireland, but equally one that will be underpinned by consent.
