Seventeen people have been charged with public order offences following a second night of disturbances at the Citywest accommodation centre in Dublin.

A total of 24 people, including five juveniles, were arrested last night during violent scenes where missiles and fireworks were thrown at gardaí

Protests have taken place outside the centre since Monday evening.

Over 300 gardaí were involved in policing last night's protests, during which three gardai were injured, with two being taken to hospital.

Seventeen people are due in court this morning. Gardai said the five male juveniles have been released and will be dealt with under the Youth Diversion Programme.

Two other men who were arrested last night have been released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardai also said that 15 scooters and e-bikes were seized last night and that a policing and security operation remains in place at Citywest.

Last night's policing operation began just before 7pm as gardaí prevented protesters arriving at Citywest from gathering in large numbers to form a critical mass.

Uniformed gardaí in soft caps directed people to leave the area under Section 8 of the Public Order Act

They also linked arms and formed lines, which protesters tried to breach, and were subjected to verbal abuse.

The public order and mounted units were deployed to push protesters back as the graduated policing plan was stepped up. The water cannon was on standby but not used.

The air support and dog units along with 150 uniform gardaí and 120 public order officers were also involved.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said there will be a "very robust" response from the criminal justice system to last night's events.

He condemned what he described as shocking and thuggish attacks on An Garda Síochána and said gardaí had behaved professionally and courageously.

Speaking at a summit of EU leaders in Brussels, he said: "It is quite shocking that people would attack our gardaí in this manner and there will be a very robust response from the criminal justice system.

"This is something that will not be tolerated, and I know that the Minister of Justice, Jim O'Callaghan, is working with the Garda Commissioner in relation to all of this.

"We will continue to resist this type of behaviour."

Minister O'Callaghan commended gardaí yesterday for what he called their professional response to the "thuggish violence at Citywest".

He said that many people have been arrested, more will follow and they will be charged, named and dealt with "relentlessly" by the criminal justice system.

A spokesperson for the Ukrainian community said families at the centre have been told to remain in their rooms and keep away from windows.

Speaking to RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Anatoliy Prymakov said families are scared and concerned.

"People were obviously being told to not get near windows, stay in your rooms," he said.

"Don't do anything ... that was essentially being done for the family's own protection, to limit their movements so that they can be safe."

Mr Prymakov said some families have been living in Citywest for a while now and it is very disappointing to see these events.

"You're dealing with families who have fled war, so you're dealing with families and people who have already suffered, who have come to Ireland seeking refuge and safety, and instead, they're finding this."

Trouble had previously broken out at the Citywest accommodation centre on Tuesday during a protest attended by around 2,000 people.

An investigation to identify all those involved is ongoing.

The demonstration had began after a man had appeared in court charged with the alleged sexual assault of a girl in the early hours of Monday morning.

A total of 30 people have now been arrested and many of these are expected in court on public order charges later today.
