Irish academic and university staff across the island of Ireland have appealed to President Michael D Higgins to nominate Dr Francesca Albanese for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
In an open letter addressed to President Higgins, the 475 university staff members and PhD candidates, formally called on President Higgins to nominate the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, for the prestigious prize.
The international lawyer specialises in human rights and the Middle East. Since May 2022, she has served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory.
Since 2018, Ms Albanese has taught and lectured at various universities in Europe and the Middle East.
Prior to her scholarly engagement, she has worked with international organisations, including the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
The signees said the internationally recognised expert in human rights and international law has "consistently advocated for peaceful resolution, accountability, and respect for human dignity".
The letter urged President Higgins to use his "esteemed position and submit a nomination to the Norwegian Nobel Committee".
