Two people arrested in connection with a garda investigation into alleged perjury during the appeal by Conor Mc Gregor into a civil court finding that he had raped Nikita Hand have been released without charge.

The man and the woman were arrested yesterday morning and detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at a Dublin garda station.

They were released after being interviewed under caution and a file will now be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The investigation is being carried out by detectives from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

It commenced after the court of appeal referred documentation in Mr Mc Gregor's case to the DPP.

Mr Mc Gregor had initially applied to introduce new evidence last July in his appeal against the finding of the High Court jury that he had raped Nikita Hand.

However he unexpectedly withdrew the application just before the hearing was due to start.

Ms Hand’s Senior Counsel John Gordon then proposed the court should refer the matter to the DPP.

He said the court had the power to do that and that it would show the concern it had for the apparent abuse of its own processes.

The three appeal court judges reviewed documentation and referred it to the DPP before the gardai commenced a criminal investigation.

These are the first arrests in this case. Gardaí say the investigation is continuing.
