A man has been rescued from the water after falling overboard from the Tarbert to Killimer Ferry earlier this morning.

A spokesperson for Valentia Coast Guard confirmed that the man fell from the ferry shortly after 9am and was recovered two hours later.

He has been taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

After the man's location was identified, he was winched on board the Coast Guard Rescue 117 helicopter, with Ballybunion Sea and Cliff Rescue Team’s Atlantic 75 and D class rescue vessels and Kilrush RNLI lifeboat assisting in the water.

The man was located on the Co Kerry side of the estuary.

As well as the Rescue 117 helicopter from Waterford, the extensive search and rescue operation also involved several units of lifeboats and local yachts.

The Ballybunion Sea and Cliff Rescue Team participated in the search, having deployed two vessels to the estuary, while assistance was also provided by Fenit lifeboat, Kilrush RNLI and Kilkee RNLI.

The ferry connects Tarbert, Co Kerry to Killimer in Co Clare and takes around 20 minutes to cross the Shannon Estuary.
