Children between the ages of five and eight can now avail of free travel on public transport across the TFI (Transport for Ireland) network by using the new child Leap Card.
The National Transport Authority (NTA) said that around 263,000 children across Ireland are now eligible for the expanded travel scheme, which they can use up to their 9th birthday.
The card covers all TFI public transport services, including Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann, Go-Ahead Ireland, Iarnród Éireann and Luas. It can be obtained via the online portal.
Children under the age of five already travel free without a card.
The NTA said the initiative, which was announced in Budget 2025, "is a key step in supporting families by reducing transport costs and promoting early adoption of sustainable travel habits".
Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien said "it supports parents and guardians in their everyday routines, and also contributes to our broader goals of reducing emissions, improving connectivity, and creating a more sustainable transport network for the future".
