Around 2,000 people have begun marching in Ballinasloe to voice their concern about what they say is the downgrading of maternity services in the local Portiuncula University Hospital.
Locals as well as a strong contingent from surrounding areas and counties are taking part.
The campaign wants a full restoration of maternity and other ancillary services for the hospital.
Councillor Evelyn Parsons of the Portiuncla Maternity Alliance said it is vital that Government takes note of this protest and stops the downgrading to ensure the viability of such services in the hospital for future generations.
Under the banner 'Care can't wait - reinstate' the marchers arrived into the environs of Portiuncla University Hospital after travelling through the Dunlo hill area of Ballinasloe.
