Former Olympic swimming coach George Gibney has arrived back in Ireland from the United States.

It is understood his flight landed in the early hours of this morning.

He was then taken to a garda station.

In a statement, gardaí said that following an extradition from the US at the request of the Irish authorities, a man in his 70s was arrested by gardaí attached to the Garda National Protective Services Bureau.

He will be brought before a sitting at the Criminal Courts of Justice later this morning.

The man is currently being detained at a garda station in Dublin.
