Behind the Story: Media v Machine: how is AI impacting news, music

Behind the Story examines how the media landscape is changing in Ireland and around the world.

Katie and David talk to Dr Eileen Culloty, Deputy Director of the DCU Institute for Media, Democracy and Society, about the rise of paywalls, how AI is changing the creation and consumption of media and whether a digital service tax should be enacted.

A Digital News Report in June revealed that 20% of people in Ireland are paying for news subscriptions - a rise of 3% on 2024 and twice as much as those who pay in the UK.

But could some people get left behind?

Dr Culloty discusses how the rise of AI is hitting news organisations in their pocket and the pressure on public service broadcasters to make their archives available.

David and Katie also explore AI's musical talents with an exclusive of their AI-generated song, 'Breaking the Airwaves'.

And as the world marks 40 years since Live Aid, the duo take a walk down memory lane and remember the best of the global phenomenon.
