Two men seriously injured in explosion on ship in Foynes Port

Two men have been seriously injured following an explosion on a ship at Shannon Foynes Port in Co Limerick this evening.

It is understood the men were carrying out routine maintenance on the ship when a gas cylinder exploded at around 6.30pm.

Emergency services, including gardaí and paramedics, attended to the scene at the port.

One man has been brought by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick while the second man was brought by air ambulance to Cork University Hospital.

Operations at the port have been suspended and are due to resume later tonight.

In a statement, Shannon Foynes Port Company confirmed that two men had been hospitalised following an incident on a ship at the port.

"The cause of the accident is being investigated by the relevant authorities, while the matter on board the ship has been made safe, with the Port due to resume operations tonight," it said.
