A search in the Slieve Bloom mountains in Co Laois as part of the investigation into the disappearance and murder of Fiona Pender has ended this evening.

Gardaí arrived at the site near Clonaslee yesterday morning and continued their operation through the night.

It follows a search earlier this week near Killeigh, Co Offaly which saw gardaí seal off an area of bog land.

They said they were not releasing the results of the search for operational reasons.

Gardaí also confirmed this week they had re-classified the case as a murder investigation however those close to the case say it has always been treated as a murder inquiry.

Gardaí have always had a chief suspect, however it is understood that that person from the Midlands emigrated from Ireland.

Over the almost 29 years, extensive enquiries have been made and searches were carried out in Co Laois, near Mountrath and Rosenalis, but no trace of Ms Pender, a hairdresser and part-time model, was ever found.

In 1997, five people were arrested as part of the investigation but were released without charge.

Gardaí say over 300 statements have been taken and thousands of documents have been gathered, however to date no one has ever been charged in connection with Ms Pender's disappearance.

Over the years, Fiona Pender's mother Josephine campaigned tirelessly for a breakthrough in the case, continuously appealing for information to find her daughter. She died in 2017.

A memorial has been erected along the Grand Canal in Tullamore in memory of Fiona Pender.

Gardaí have renewed their appeal for information asking anyone who may have previously come forward but who felt they could not provide gardaí with all the information, to contact the investigation team again.

Anyone with any information can contact Tullamore Garda Station on 057 932 7600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
