A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after two people were seriously injured when a car struck a number of people outside a pub in Co Down last night.

The PSNI said the incident occurred around 11.05pm on Main Street in Millisle.

The man, 47, has been released on bail to allow for further enquiries to be carried out.

After crashing into the crowd the car is reported to have turned around and been driven past the pub again before making off from the scene.

"The vehicle was located a short time later outside Walkers Lane, Millisle. One man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and a number of driving offences, he is currently in police custody," said Detective Inspector Oonagh Ryan.

Police officers and members of the ambulance service responded and provided treatment.

Two people were taken to hospital for treatment for serious injuries.

At least one picnic bench outside the Woburn Arms pub lay shattered on the pavement.

Locals said the village pubs had been packed due to a festival which had taken place earlier in the day.

Main Street in Millisle was closed as part of a follow up operation, but has since reopened.

The PSNI is appealing for anyone who was in the area last night or who has relevant dashcam or doorbell footage to contact them.

Millisle is a coastal resort which draws many holiday makers from Belfast.

Ulster Unionist councillor Pete Wray said people were shocked by the overnight incident.

He said he had been in the village for the maritime event and there had been a "fabulous atmosphere".

He said he had spoken to the local police commander who had reassured him the incident was not linked to terrorism or organised crime.
