A six-year-old girl who died after being hit by a truck while cycling on the outskirts of Galway city at the weekend has been named locally as Ula Grigaityte.

The collision occurred at the junction of Headford Road and Sandyvale Lawn in Galway city at around noon on Saturday.

It is understood that Ula lived with her family in another estate nearby.

Scoil Róis Primary School in Salthill has paid tribute to Ula, who attended Senior Infants there.

In a statement, school principal Michele McCarra described it as a "terrible tragedy" for Ula's family and for the school community.

"We are deeply saddened by these events. Our thoughts are with Ula's family and friends. Ula will be greatly missed by all who knew her," she said.

"We have been in contact with her parents and we all understand their need for privacy at this difficult time. Offers of support are pouring in and are greatly appreciated."

The school has implemented its Critical Incident Management Plan and psychologists from the National Education Psychological Service have been supporting and advising staff in how best to help students.

The school is also open to parents to offer them advice and guidance.

Tributes left at the Sandyvale Lawn stone

Flowers, teddies and candles have been left close to the scene of the crash.

Local resident Eileen Curran told RTÉ News that everyone was in shock.

"It's like a dark blanket all over us today, a beautiful child," she said.

Another resident, Niluka Vidyarathne, said she has a daughter around the same age.

"I have a daughter, the same, her age, she's six, and I couldn't sleep last night," she said.

Sinéad O'Donnell, who lives in the estate, said she wanted to "show respect and solidarity" as she laid flowers.
