More than 200 volunteers joined the search for missing sheep farmer Michael Gaine in the Kenmare area of Co Kerry.

The Coast Guard, Civil Defence and gardaí combed the area around the old Gaine farmhouse and outbuildings, which are located in the mountainous terrain of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks.

The Kerry Mountain Rescue Team has been stood down for the night.

Independent Councillor Dan McCarthy is manager of Kenmare co-cop a close friend of Mr Gaine.

He said the 56-year-old sheep and cattle farmer has 1,000 acres of land in the area, but he and his wife live outside Kenmare.

Michael Gaine was last seen in Kenmare town at 11am on Thursday

"You can see the massive amount of cars and people here that have been searching 'til late last night and again today. We're all so concerned and I want to thank everyone coming out and helping," Mr McCarthy said.

"It's not like Mike to be missing because he was always around to feed the animals in the morning and of the evening," Mr McCarthy said.

"So it’s just getting very concerning as to where he is. But look at the show of support from the local community. It speaks volumes."

Teresa Gleeson and Siobhan Horgan wiped away tears and struggled to put into words the upset of the local community at the disappearance of Mr Gaine. Ms Gleeson works with and is a friend of his sister.

"His wife and sisters are broken-hearted and completely devastated by all of this. It just doesn't make sense that Mike has disappeared," Ms Horgan said.

"Our hearts go out to the family. We're all rallying around and turning out to search and do whatever we to help find Mike.

"There are people here in the kitchen providing tea and sandwiches throughout the day and we'll stay as long as it takes."

The old farmhouse dwelling continues to be a focus of activity with diggers and sniffer dogs on site.

It is understood an aerial sweep of the area is also to take place.

Hundreds of people joined a co-ordinated search effort

Gardaí are continuing to treat this as a missing person investigation and are appealing to anybody with information to come forward.

The search area yesterday was concentrated on an area of rough ground above and below where Mr Gaine's house is located.

A number of vehicles were removed from the scene yesterday, including Mr Gaine's car.

Anyone with information on Mr Gaine's whereabouts is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 667 1160, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
