The winner of the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham racing festival has received a hero's welcome home in Co Meath.

Hundreds of people turned out for the homecoming of Inothewayurthinkin at Skryne GAA club.

The JP McManus owned seven-year-old - a late entry into the festival showpiece - won the race by six lengths, denying Galopin Des Champs a hat trick.

He was paraded around the pitch in front of fans of all ages, alongside his Cheltenham Cross Country Chase winning stablemate Stumptown.

Trainer Gavin Cromwell, who was accompanied by his wife Kiva and three children Camron, Sophie and Jake, said he is "still on cloud nine after a great few days".

He said Inothewayurthinkin is the first horse he has trained to enter the Gold Cup race, but "hopefully not the last."

"I never thought I'd have a horse good enough to run in the Gold Cup, let alone to win it," he added.

Following the race, the horse had been the favourite for the Aintree Grand National next month, but a decision has now been taken not to enter the world-famous steeplechase.

Mr Cromwell said the horse is "only a seven-year-old and we think he's too young for it."

"I know he would look very well in at the weights and he's clear favourite for it, but I think we’ll do the right thing by the horse, and hopefully he's going to be a horse for the Gold Cup again next year."

Asked about contesting the Punchestown Gold Cup at the end of April, he said: "It is possible but not definite. We'll see how he is over the next few weeks, and I'll talk to Frank Berry and JP McManus, and we'll make a decision closer to the time."

Speaking at his racing yard in Danestown ahead of the homecoming, Mr Cromwell, who began his career as a farrier, described the win as "huge".

"It's a great lift for everyone. It's a massive occasion and we're very privileged to have a horse like this, and to have won it."

Inothewayurthinkin's jockey Mark Walsh, who was also at the homecoming, said he is "still buzzing" after his big win in Prestbury Park.

"It’s one of those races that you always dream of winning, so I'm just delighted that I did."

"There was no pressure on me going out on the horse. I think all the pressure was on Paul Townend riding Galopin Des Champs.

"So, I just went out and rode a normal race, and everything panned out perfect for me."

Accompanied by his parents Rita and John, Mr Walsh said winning the prestigious race was "massive" and one of the highlights of his career.

"It's what you dream about as a young lad starting out. These are the races you want to win, and I'm just lucky enough to have won it."

"Cheltenham is our main week of the year. You know, it's our Olympics. So, to win the Gold Cup at it is special."

Inothewayurthinkin’s groom Caoimhe O'Brien said the last few days since the win have been "so surreal".
