New figures show that knife seizures are slightly down year-on-year but that seizures have soared by almost 60% in past decade.

The Government is set to crack down on knife crime, despite the slight drop in seizures.

It follows confirmation that over 2,100 knives were seized by gardaí last year, compared to 2,193 in 2023.

But, significantly the data shows that the number of knives seized, has soared by almost 60% in the past ten years.

Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan has announced he will be bringing forward legislation, which will give greater powers to the gardaí to stop and search people, who they suspect may be carrying knives.

Of the 2,157 knives seized around the country, half of those were across the six Dublin garda regions.

Of the 1,050 knives seized in Dublin, 325 were in Dublin North Central, 250 in Dublin South Central, and a further 188 in the Dublin Northern Region.

Around the country, the highest seizures were in Limerick (141), Cork City (126), and Cavan-Monaghan/Louth (112).

An Garda Síochána's Operation Soteria has been in place since 2019, focused on the prevention of assaults and associated crimes (including knife crime).
