Second man charged over fatal Dublin city centre stabbing

A 21-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with the violence in Dublin city centre over the weekend during which one man died and another was seriously injured.

Rory Carr, from Ard Na Gréine, Seapoint Lane in Balbriggan, Co Dublin, has been charged with three offences.

He is accused of assaulting Quham Babatunde on South Anne Street and causing him harm last Saturday night.

The 34-year-old died after he was stabbed. A murder investigation is continuing

Mr Carr is also accused of violent disorder and of assaulting a second man on South Anne Street last Saturday night and causing him harm. The victim remains in hospital.

The offences are contrary to the Non-Fatal Offences against the Person Act and the Criminal Justice Public Order Act.

Garda Paul Cummins gave evidence of arrest charge and caution.

Gda Cummins told the court that he arrested Mr Carr at 10.41pm last night and when he was charged 15 minutes later, he made no reply

He said there would be objections to bail but defence solicitor Evan Moore said there would be no bail application today.

Judge Paula Murphy granted Mr Carr free legal aid after she was told he was not working and had no assets.

She remanded him in custody to appear again at Clover Hill District Court next Wednesday. He consented to appear by video link.

He is the second man to appear in court in the past two days charged here in connection with the offences in Dublin city centre over the weekend.

Jeffrey Bangu, 21, from Cardy Rock Crescent in Balbriggan, Co Dublin, has been charged with four offences, including assaulting Mr Babatunde and causing him harm at Duke Lane, and assaulting the other victim who remains in hospital.

He is also accused of two violent disorder offences, using or threatening to use violence and producing a knife in the course of a fight in a manner to unlawfully intimidate another person.

Mr Bangu is due back before Clover Hill District Court next Tuesday.

A 23-year-old man is still being questioned by the PSNI after his period of detention was extended yesterday at Lisburn Magistrates Court.
