A document entitled 'The Naming of Deceased Jesuits Regarding Child Sexual Abuse Complaints' has been published by the Jesuit Order.
A further 15 deceased Jesuits who have been the subject of child sexual abuse complaints, eight of whom were already the subject of complaint during their lifetimes, were named.
1. Fr Rupert Coyle SJ: 1896-1978
There have been four child sexual abuse complaints made against Fr Rupert Coyle SJ. A number of additional concerns about his abusive behaviour were also raised with the Order. All complaints relate to his time in Belvedere College. The report states that they are not aware of any complaints having been made against Fr Coyle during his lifetime.
2. Fr Shaun Curran SJ: 1924-1999
The Order says it has received 18 child sexual abuse complaints against Fr Shaun Curran SJ, and two complaints from third parties. Four of these complaints and the complaints from third parties were received during his lifetime. None of the complaints were reported to An Garda Síochána during his lifetime.
3. Fr Brendan Kearney SJ: 1935-2014
There have been two child sexual abuse complaints made to the Order against Fr Brendan Kearney SJ. Further concerns about his behaviour were also raised with the Order by third parties, since 2021. All relate to his time at Belvedere College. The report states that the order is not aware of any child sexual abuse complaints having been made against Fr Kearney during his lifetime.
4. Fr John T. Kelly SJ: 1906-1977
There have been five complaints of sexual abuse made against Fr John T Kelly SJ relating to his time at Mungret College, Limerick. The abuse spans the period from 1940 to 1955.
5. Fr Patrick Kelly SJ: 1920-2012
There have been five complaints of child sexual abuse made to the Order against Fr Patrick Kelly SJ. All complaints relate to his time in the US during the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s. These complaints were first made in the US, as were a number of concerns by third parties that other children may have been abused by him there.
6. Fr Kevin Laheen SJ: 1919-2019
In 1967, serious concerns were conveyed to the Order by a third party about the behaviour of Fr Kevin Laheen SJ when he was giving a school retreat. In 1999, Fr Laheen informed the Order that a complaint of child sexual abuse had been made to gardaí about him and that this was under investigation by gardaí. A complaint by a third party, relating to the 1960s but received after Fr Laheen's death, has also been referenced in documents.
7. Fr Henry (Harry) Lawlor SJ: 1911-1989
In 1969 whilst ministering in the Diocese of Hartford, Connecticut, Fr Henry (Harry) Lawlor became the subject of a non-specific complaint which, in the light of subsequent child sexual abuse allegations received after his death, the Order now believes was related to child sexual abuse. Additionally, in Ireland, five complaints of child sexual abuse against him were received subsequent to his death, the first of which was received in 2002. Two concerns were also raised by third parties. None of these allegations relate to his work in Jesuit schools according to the findings of the working group.
8. Fr John A (Jack) Leonard SJ: 1912-1992
There have been four child sexual abuse complaints, and also complaints regarding physical violence, made against Fr John A (Jack) Leonard SJ. Complainants also raised concerns about others being abused by him. All the complaints relate to his time in Belvedere College. The order is not aware of any complaints of child sexual abuse being made against Fr Leonard during his lifetime. However, it is acknowledged that his bullying and and physically abusive behaviour was known in the school at the time.
9. Fr Finbarr Lynch SJ: 1933-2022
There are two child sexual abuse complaints against Fr Finbarr Lynch SJ relating to his time in Belvedere College, Dublin. These complaints were received in 2021 and 2022 respectively and were reported to gardaí and Tusla. Two complaints of physical abuse were also received by the Order.
10. Fr Michael McGrath SJ: 1910-1989
There were two complaints of child sexual abuse made against Fr Michael McGrath SJ relating to his ministry in Galway. The first referred to abuse occurring in the context of Our Lady’s Boys’ Club. The second complaint referred to abuse at St Ignatius’ College (Coláiste Iognáid) Galway. The working group states it is not aware of any child sexual abuse complaints having been made against Fr Michael McGrath SJ during his lifetime.
11. Fr Oliver Joseph O’Brien SJ: 1920-1994
The Order has received seven complaints of child sexual abuse, and one further concern raised by a third party, against Fr Oliver O'Brien SJ relating to his time in Ireland. The complaints against him refer to Belvedere College, Dublin, Gardiner Street Church, Dublin, and Sacred Heart College, Limerick.
12. Br Edward O'Sullivan SJ: 1920-1996
There have been two child sexual abuse complaints made against Br Edward O'Sullivan SJ, one relating to his time in the Jesuit Retreat House in Rahan, Co Offaly, and the other regarding his time as sacristan in St Francis Xavier Church, Gardiner Steet, Dublin. The report states that it is not aware of any child sexual abuse complaints having been made against Br O'Sullivan SJ during his lifetime.
13. Fr Diarmuid Ó Péicín SJ: 1916-2008
There are two complaints of child sexual abuse against Fr Diarmuid Ó Péicín SJ. There is one third-party complaint of child sexual abuse against him.
14. Br Douglas A Pill SJ: 1918-2003
There have been two complaints of child sexual abuse made against Br Douglas Pill SJ relating to his time in Milltown Park, Dublin. "We are not aware of any child sexual abuse complaints having been made against Br Douglas Pill SJ during his lifetime".
15. Fr James Stephenson SJ: 1906-1979
There are four child sexual abuse complaints against Fr James Stephenson SJ. The complaints against him relate to Sacred Heart College Limerick and to Gardiner Street Church Dublin during the 1950s and 1960s. "We are not aware of any child sexual abuse complaints having been made against Fr James Stephenson SJ during his lifetime".
