Gardaí continuing to investigate Co Clare school email threats

Gardaí are continuing to investigate a security threat issued to a number of schools in Co Clare early this morning which caused many to close and which also caused anxiety and fear among pupils, parents and teachers.

An email threatening violence and purporting to come from a certain individual at an address in the county was sent to the schools in the early hours of this morning.

The message was widely circulated on social media and among parents and pupils WhatsApp groups earlier.

From their initial inquiries gardaí said they are satisfied that no credible threat existed as a result of the communication and that there is no ongoing risk to the public.

However, their inquiries are continuing into the incident and they are investigating all the circumstances surrounding this communication, including whether a number of unknown parties had an involvement in its distribution.

In relation to the name and address posted on the message, gardaí point out that no specific role can be attributed to any named person or address in any communication which has been circulated.

They add that no arrests have been made at this stage.
