Two Dublin councillors walk out of monthly meeting

Two councillors have walked out of Dublin City Council's monthly meeting after councillors voted against a proposal to discuss Dublin's "crime crisis" as a topical issue.

After the vote against the proposal, Independent Councillor Malachy Steenson interrupted proceeds to say he believed it was a "disgrace" that councillors had voted against the issue, describing the meeting as a "farce".

Independent Councillor Gavin Pepper said it was a "joke" and the pair stood up and left the chamber after which councillors applauded.

It comes after a knife attack in the Stoneybatter area of the city yesterday in which three men sustained what have been described as "slashing-type injuries".

A man in his 20s who was arrested remains in garda custody.

In a separate incident, a man was arrested following an armed robbery at a shop in Ballymun.

The man, aged in his 30s, entered a shop on Marewood Crescent in Ballymun around 2.30pm armed with a knife, threatened staff and removed property before leaving on foot.

He was arrested in the Sandyhill Gardens area during a follow-up operation and remains detained at a garda station in Dublin.
