Three men have been injured following what gardaí described as a "serious incident" in Dublin.

Gardaí said the men, aged from their mid-20s to mid-40s, were attacked by a man in his late-20s in the Stoneybatter area of the city at around 3pm yesterday.

A number of scenes have been preserved for technical examination in the area as gardaí said they continue to investigate the incident.

The men were injured at a number of locations in the residential area, including on Oxmantown Road and Niall Street.

They sustained what have been described as "slashing-type injuries".

All three were removed by ambulance to be treated in hospital.

Two are described as having serious but non-life threatening injuries, while the third person suffered a less serious injury.

A man has been arrested and is being held at a garda station in Dublin under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice.

A number of streets in Stoneybatter had been sealed off for a time but they have all now reopened.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said "our thoughts are with the victims of the shocking attacks in Stoneybatter earlier today".

Mr Martin also praised gardaí and emergency services "for their prompt response".

"I wish all those injured a full recovery and urge anyone with any information to contact gardaí."

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald said "my thoughts are with those injured and their families. The community is in a state of shock".

The Dublin Central TD added: "The Gardaí and emergency services are to be commended for their response."

A garda spokesperson said the force responded to the incident with "significant" resources including unarmed gardaí and detective gardaí who were supported by Armed Support Units.

Gardaí intercepted and arrested the man close to the scene of the incident.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who was in the Stoneybatter area between 2.30pm and 3.30pm, and who may have any video footage linked to the incident, to contact them.

They believe the suspect acted alone and said they are increasing their visibility in the area to "reassure the community".

Those with information are asked to contact Bridewell Garda Station on 01 6668200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
