Man found dead following fire at apartment in Cork city

A man has been found dead following a fire at an apartment on Togher Road on the southside of Cork city.

Four units of Cork City Fire Brigade attended the property at around 7pm. The man was found dead in the property.

The fire was contained within one room at the apartment.

The body of the man, who is understood to be in his 60s, remains at the scene.

A second person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The property has been preserved for a technical examination. This will establish the cause of the fire.

The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be carried out at Cork University Hospital.

This will determine the course of the garda investigation. The city coroner's office has been informed and an inquest will be held in due course.
