A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a woman in Waterford city this morning.
Shortly after 10am, gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident at a house on O'Brien Street in the city.
A garda spokesperson said that the woman, who was in her 40s, was found unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead a short time later.
A man in his 30s was arrested in connection with the incident.
He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be held for up to 24 hours.
Members of the Garda Technical Bureau have carried out an examination of the scene and the woman's body was taken from the house.
A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out tomorrow morning and its findings will determine the course of the Garda investigation.
A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been set up in Waterford Garda Station.
Gardaí have assigned a family liaison officer to support the family.
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact them and are seeking any available camera footage, including dashcam recordings, from those who were in the vicinity of O'Brien Street at the time of the incident.
